PROGRAM

2pm – 2.30pm Claude Closky, Shona Stark
Chaos Breaks Out Special Payout

Claude Closky will be joined by Shona Stark for a two-voice performance, blending excerpts from his pieces: “Amazing Low Prices” (1990–2023), “Welcome to My Blog” (2006), “Sunday Then Monday Then Tuesday Then Wednesday Then Thursday Then Friday Then Saturday” (2017), “Chaos Breaks Out Special Payout” (2023), and “I Like This” (2021).

2.30pm – 3pm Simon Morris (Leeds Beckett University)
The Making of Inscription: the Journal of Material Text – Theory, Practice, History

Inscription is a cross-platform work that is: an artist’s book, a curated exhibition space for multi-media works, and an academic journal for critical discussion surrounding the materiality of text. Morris will discuss the historical precedents for this work and the artistic strategies that have informed its radical departure from more conservative models of academic journals.

3pm – 4pm Sezgin Boynik (Rab-Rab Press), Johanna Drucker & Eugene Ostashevsky
bie bao series

This discussion will give insight into the artistic and intellectual formation of Ilya Zdanevich, focusing on his political ideas, theories of language, typographical inventions, and artist-books productions, and will introduce lesser-known figures that Zdanevich worked with.

4pm – 5pm Jonas (J) Magnusson (OEI), Cecilia Grönberg (OEI)
The Image Activists: Actions in Image in the 1960s and 1970s in Sweden

This talk will present Bildaktivisterna. Aktioner i bild i svenskt 1960- och 1970-tal (“The Image Activists: Actions in Image in the 1960s and 1970s in Sweden”), a 1064 page book on the intense activities of a previously non-historicized socialist Swedish photo collective called the Image Activists. But even as they revolutionized Swedish photography with their new and explosive media dispositive, they were subsequently left out of history.

5pm – 7pm Gideon Kong (Temporary Press), Januar Rianto (Further Reading), Yaya Liu (Art Book in China), Maxim Cormier (da-in-print), Beatrix Pang (Small Tune Press), Helen Jungyeon Ku (Mediabus/The Book Society) & Lim Kyung yong (Mediabus/The Book Society)
Ways of Working Together in Asia

Publishing as Method is an anthology that introduces various publishing practices in the Asian region. At this event, several initiatives participating in this year’s Miss Read will introduce their activities, and the editors of Mediabus, who edited Publishing as Method, will take the time to explain the background of this book.

7pm – 8pm Clara Balaguer (Hardworking Goodlooking/BAK, basis voor actuele kunst), Czar Kristoff (Hardworking Goodlooking/Studio CK) & Mac Andre Arboleda
Grateful for Your Invitation But…

In this panel discussion, the organizers of ARCHIVE FOR SALE discuss how the context of publishing from the Philippines conformed their decision to attend Miss Read 2023 as a consortium of publishers offering an entire archive for sale. While remaining grateful for the generosity of grants and other support structures that want to increase diversity in the cultural sphere (especially in colonial centers), they will address the areas in which these well-meaning attempts may increase rather than reduce precarity, competition, and gentrification.

8pm – 9pm Beatrix Pang (Queer Reads Library)
Fill in the Blanks: Queer Print Culture in Hong Kong

Queer Reads Lexicon II is the second edition of a work-in-process series. The contents in every issue will be selected and edited from our queer lexicon workshops. In this issue we discussed some queer words in Chinese languages being banned and censored on the internet. Fill in the Blanks: Queer Print Culture in Hong Kong is a research project started in the summer 2022 as a one-month incubator residency at WMA space in Hong Kong that started to look into the queer history of Hong Kong through the introduction of various independently published printed matters in different eras.
